Hotels in
South Iceland
Vik
is the southernmost village in Iceland. From the capital,
Reykjavik, it's approx. 122 miles to Vik. It's is the
only coastal village in Iceland with no harbour &
only a beach. The beach south of Vik was named one of
the 10 most beautiful islands beaches in the
word by Islands Magazine in 1991. From the beach you can
see thee rock pillars rise up to 66 m from the sea.
Dyrhólaey
is a 120-metre high promontory, not far from Vík.
The place got its name from the massive arch that the
sea has eroded from the headland. (The name literally
means "door-hole"). When the sea is calm, big
boats can sail through it. It's defenetely worth a visit.
On
the way to Vik there is the spectacular waterfall Skógafoss
in Skóga. The Great Geysir - one of the greatest
natural attractions of Iceland and part of the famous
"Golden Circle Tour" can also be found in the
south.
To
the south of Hveragerði, there is the small port of
Þorlákshöfn, point of departure for
the ferry to the Westman Islands
